Old Firm Out Of Cup

Mount came up against a fast and skilful Glamorgan Wanderers team at the Memorial Ground on a lovely sunny day. The home team were well drilled and had pace throughout the team from forwards to backs, with their support play excellent. From all areas of the pitch, including from deep in their own half, they opened up in impressive style. Mount also contributed to the game and could have scored more than the three tries they ended up with, with several tries going to the Wanderers after the Old Firm failed to take their chance of scoring.

The home team went in front in the first minute but Mount responded with a Callum Hall penalty and then a try from a break by centre Jamie Long in the Wanderers’ 22. Hall converted to make it 10-5 to the Old Firm. The Wanderers attacked and an excellent tackle by wing Cole Nash stopped a potential try.

The attacks kept on coming from all over the field from the home team. Hooker Jarrad Parfitt scored for Mount with a powerful burst from the Wanderers’ 22 metre line and scored, Hall converting to make it 33-17 to the home team at half time.

A break by centre Jamie Long early in the second half had the Wanderers in trouble but he had back luck to lose the ball near halfway and the home team run down the field and scored. The pace of the game was fast for the whole 80 minutes despite the hot weather.

Flanker David Richards made a superb smoother tackle on a Wanderers player who had got away in the Mount half. A Mount attack took play deep into the Wanderers 22, and when the ball was moved along the backline, centre Steve Brittain scored in the corner. Outside half Hall converted with a superb kick from the touchline to make it 60-24.

Full back Jarrod Cushion defended superbly in the last couple of minutes, running back in the Mount 22 to tackle the home wing and then stop another player.

The Wanderers looked as if they will test most teams in the division on a fine day in Ely. Whether they have the forwards, backs and the game for wet weather rugby away from home will be known shortly.
