1st, 2nd and Youth XVs Win

Mount took two sides away, with the 2nds playing Division 3 West Central club Neath Athletic and the 1st XV taking on Championship West club Ystalyfera. The game in Ystalyfera was a good workout for both Mount and the home club, with the game competitive over the three thirds played. Both sides made half a dozen changes as the game progressed. Mount scored the only try of the game in the second third when a nice pass by centre Steve Brittain to Jamie Long in midfield saw him cut through from 35 metres out and sprint in under the posts. Outside half Callum Hall converted. The Mount defence was tight and well organized all game and repelled plenty of Ystalyfera attacks, with only a two or three getting to 5 metres out. In the final third, wing Iestyn Robins was put away and took play up to the Ystalyfera 22. Pressure by Mount took play to 5 metres out but two cheap penalties and then a high tackle allowed the home team to clear from near their own line and take play up to the Mount 22. The Old Firm nearly had a second try in the last third when Morgan James joined the line and put in a well-placed grubber kick into the corner which was nearly regathered by a fast following-up Mount attacker who just nudged it on.

Mountain Ash 2nd XV came back from 7-0 down against Neath Athletic to win 14-12. Try scorer for the Old Firm were forward Gavin Powell and back Gareth Williams. Mountain Ash Youth made it an excellent treble when they beat Dowlais Youth 49-7 at the Rec on Thursday night. Any young player wishing to get in the action and join Mountain Ash Youth is welcome to attend training at the Rec on Tuesday and Thursday, 6:30pm on.

The Old Firm take on Rhymney this Thursday, 22 August, at Duffryn Pennar Park, kick off 7:30pm.
