Mistakes Cost Mount

The Old Firm’s chances of promotion took a big blow with this loss.

During the first half, Mount played up the slope and coped well enough with the home team. After outside half Callum Hall had kicked two penalties to put Mount 6-3 up, centre Alex Hughes, outside half Hall, and wing Declan Conway opened up the Cambrian defence to put full back Jarrod Cushion away in the home side’s half but the referee judged the pass to him forward.

The second half got off to the worst possible start for the Old Firm with what looked like a straight forward catch for one of the forwards from the restart being botched. Cambrian took full advantage to take play into the Mount 22 and after a penalty and a 15 metre lineout, they eventually drove over for a try near the posts which was also converted to put them in front 10-6.

A sliced kick to just outside the Mount 22 saw another Cambrian attack and very nearly another try, but some good cover by the Mount defence held the attacker up over the line.

A penalty to the Old Firm after pressure in the Cambrian 22 by wing Morgan James and scrum half Ross Davies was converted by Hall to reduce the home side’s lead to 10-9 after an hour’s play. But it was short lived.

Loose ball in the Mount 22 was picked up by centre Hughes who slipped a pass to Iestyn Robins to put the speedy full back in space with support. An attack looked on with Cambrian lacking cover. But, he decided to kick instead of attack and from the short kick ahead straight to a Cambrian player, the ball was passed infield which started another Cambrian attack to the other side of the field. A strong run by a forward and ruck ball moved had the Mount defence in trouble wide out and the move was finished off with a try in the corner, well converted to make it 17-9.

A well-struck penalty from 47 metres put the home team 20-9 up, but the Old Firm rallied in the final 10 minutes, applying pressure in and around the Cambrian 22, where they were met with a determined home defence.

With the game in injury time, scrum half Ross Davies dummied from a ruck and got over under the posts from 5 metres out for Hall to convert, but there was no time left for a final attack as the referee blew up.

This Wednesday, 3 May, Mount are away to Rumney in a Division 1 East Central game, kick off 7:00pm. This Saturday, 6 May, they are away to St Peter’s in another League game, kick off is 2:30pm.
