Extra Weight Tells

Rumney’s extra size and weight at forward won this game at Duffryn Pennar Park. With them having Mount in a stranglehold for the first hour of the match, they built up a 24-8 lead. In the last quarter the Old Firm changed tactics and started keeping the ball in hand and running at the Cardiff side, which proved to be effective. A try to make it 24-13 and further pressure made the end of the game uncomfortable for Rumney, but they had enough of a cushion.

Rumney made a fast start, monopolising the ball and taking it through what must have been twenty phases. A missed tackle in midfield by the Mount defence on the 22 saw burly prop Jarrett given the scoring pass a few yards out to touchdown. The conversion made it 7-0 after just 2 minutes.

A pinpoint penalty to touch by Mount outside half Callum Hall gave the Old Firm a lineout deep in the Rumney 22. Interference at a ruck saw the visitor’s centre yellow carded. Mount opted for the scrum rather than take the points under the posts but the scrum was lost against the head and Rumney cleared. Further pressure by the Old Firm on the Rumney line was again held out. A good 10 minutes of Mount pressure in the Rumney half failed to yield any points though. Outside half Callum Hall kicked a fine penalty from 40 metres to put Mount on the board and make it 5-3 after 25 minutes.

Another turnover at a scrum on the Mount 22 and a missed tackle in midfield resulted in the visitors scoring their second try to make it 10-3.

A midfield break by one of the Mount centres cut right through the Rumney defence but the pass out wide on the opposition’s 22 was not to hand and the scoring chance missed. Just on half time, Mount pressure in the Rumney 22 took the ball to one touchline and back with full back Jarrod Cushion going over wide out for a try which made it 10-8 to Rumney at half time.

The Old Firm did not help themselves in the first quarter of the second half with kicks out of defence which did not test the Rumney defence and allowed them to set up easy attacks.

A third try for Rumney was scored after 53 minutes from close-in, with the conversion extending the Cardiff club’s lead to 17-8.

A yellow card to a Mount forward after some desperate defence stopped a Rumney score but at scrum shortly after the referee run under the posts and awarded a penalty try which took the lead up to 24-8 after 64 minutes.

The last 20 minutes belonged to the Old Firm who started running at Rumney. Second row Steffan Calderbank got a deserved home try after 71 minutes and time wasting by the visitors was penalised by the referee and a yellow card issued as well. Frustratingly, a kick for a 5 metre lineout was just too long and the visitor’s dropped out.

There was plenty of spirited attacking and defence by Mount throughout the game, but that extra weight, height and size told in the end.
