Old Firm Start New Plate Competition With Away Win

The Old Firm played their first game in the new-style WRU Plate competition. The tournament is made up of divisions made up of 5, 6 or 7 clubs maximum. The winners and runners-up from the divisions with more clubs in them, will be drawn out of the hat to play each other, with quarter finals, semi-finals and a final taking place, so there is all to play for.

In the game away to Aberdare, Mount scored 4 converted tries and led 21-3 at half time. The Old Firm put together some nice passages of play and scored 3 converted tries in a first half they dominated for the most part, but when they were called on to defend Aberdare drives in their 22, they were not found wanting. The second half was more even without ever really taking off. Although Aberdare were more in the Mount half, it was the Old Firm who scored the only points from a speculative kick into their opponents half which was quickly followed up by wing Curtis Williams, who chased all game. With the ball not gathered, then fumbled by another player from a pass, Williams got hold of the ball and passed to flanker Jordan Burke who strolled in under the posts from 5 metres out for a bonus point try, which was converted. Although Mount had 2 yellow cards in quick succession late in the game, there was still no way through for Aberdare, leaving the final score as 28-3. One of the aspects of the game which must be addressed by the Mount team and coaches is the number of penalties given away. It gave Aberdare an easy get-out and allowed them to push play up the field. Mount need to tighten up and not be so generous, as the stronger teams in this competition will take advantage.
