For the first time since 1939/40, a season was brought to an end due to the seriousness of the circumstances facing the country. In September 1939 it was the outbreak of war with Germany, but in 2019, it was the war against coronavirus, also known as Corvid-19.
Below are the details of the 2019/20 season, which officially came to an end on Friday 20 March.
1st XV
The Old Firm made a promising start and won 8 of the first 11 games played. The 41-22 away loss to Penallta on a 3G pitch seemed to dent the confidence of the Mount side and after that game there was just one win and a draw in the next six. On their day, Mount had the beating of every team in the division. Rumney suffered their first defeat of the season at Duffryn Pennar Park, 14-13, in the Specsavers Cup. Rhydyfelin’s unbeaten record was also taken, with the Old Firm beating them twice in 11 days – 25-17 at the Rec in the Mid District Cup, and 32-29 in a 6 try win down in Hawthorn when Rhydyfelin topped the Division 1 East Central table. The first half at home to St Peter’s in the League was the best display for several seasons. There was a good win in Porth and another 6 try performance, at Duffryn Pennar Park this time, against Ynysybwl, who were beaten 40-19. Maybe complacency cost Mount certain games, but whatever the reason, the challenge next season will be to fulfil their undoubted potential in a very competitive division.
