6 Tries For Mount In Home Win

The Old Firm scored 6 tries in this Division 1 East Central game but were made to work for them by a Barry team that held their shape throughout the match.

After wing Cole Nash came close, No.8 Daniel Phillips received the ball in midfield, went through a gap and shrugged off a tackler to run in from 15 metres out to score under the posts. Outside half Callum Hall converted to make it 7-0.

Mount went straight back on the attack, centre Steve Brittain made ground to 10 metres out with a jinking run. The Barry scrum was under pressure 5 metres out, and when the second scrum skewed, the referee awarded a penalty try, which made it 14-0 after 21 minutes.

The Old Firm were hesitant on times and some of the passing erratic.

With 5 minutes to go to half time, a sensational try was scored by No.8 Cameron Davies. From a drive into midfield by Barry, he took the ball off the attacker and raced away on a 50 metre run outpacing the Barry midfield to score a try under the posts. Hall converted for a 21-0 lead.

The referee awarded a second penalty try from a scrum right on half time to make it 28-0 at the turnround.

Prop James Cowdry did well to hold a “hospital” pass on the Barry 22 early in the second half and then full back Cushion dummied and side stepped from halfway to get to the Barry 22 where a try looked on but his pass was ruled forward.

No.8 Jordan Burke made a welcome return to the field after being injured since last October and put in some strong drives forward.

Mount’s fifth try of the game was the best one by a long way as they took the ball through phases after phase and worked their way up to the Barry line where second row Mitchell Barnard scored to make it 33-0.

Prop Bleddyn Lock got the 6th try after claiming the loose ball from a 5 metre lineout on the Barry line with 71 minutes played.

The game ended with the crowd laughing as young prop McGinley Price was shown the yellow card for throwing a stray boot off the field. But it was the visitors who had the last laugh of the night with a touchdown from a quick tap penalty close to the Mount line to make it 38-5.
