Win Takes Young Firm To Top Of Table

This was a top of the table local derby League game. The Young Firm had already played Aberdare twice this season with wins each time, albeit close, so they knew that the home side would be looking for some payback.

It was a nervy start to the game with both sides losing set pieces. After 5 minutes Mount made a good break with a wing being stopped just short of the line. The Young Firm managed to stay in the Aberdare half and 5 minutes later stole an Aberdare defensive 5 metre lineout, which No.8 and captain Steffan Calderbank drove over from for the first score. Jayden Pugh converted to make it 7-0.

Although Mount made a couple more breaks they were unable to capitalise on them and score. After 25 minutes Mount had the chance to kick a penalty from near the half way line, but it drifted wide, but a minute later, they had another penalty from a similar position which Jayden Pugh converted with a fine kick to make it 10-0 at half time went over.

The Young Firm started the second half with the same tempo as the first, winning a penalty from a ruck, Pugh slotting it over to make it 13-0. Aberdare responded by picking up the pace and came back, scoring tries after 10 and 17 minutes to make it game on with Mount’s lead reduced to 13-10. The Young Firm defended well after that, with Mount able to hold Aberdare out with some good defensive work. With 5 minutes left on the clock Pugh kicked another penalty to give Mount a 6 point lead which they held on to. The win puts Mount top of the Championship table with two games left to play.

Try: Steffan Calderbank. Penalties: Jayden Pugh 3. Conversions: Jayden Pugh (1).
