This was the Young Firm’s first game in the Cardiff Rugby Championship – a league where the Mount team has been seeded based on their ‘Blues’ Cup performances.
Llanishen have a 3g pitch which meant the game was on despite many being rained off. It was good for the boys to be able to play and get straight back into it after the Xmas break.
Mount started well and seemed to dominate the first half with much of the territory in their favour. A penalty early on made it 3-0, but Llanishen held their line until around 23 minutes had gone when prop McGinley Price drove over from a ruck at close range, Jayden Pugh converting. Two minutes, the same player broke out of a ruck on the Mount 22 and made it to halfway, offloading to fellow prop Harvey Roberts, who then passed to hooker and stand-in captain Rhys Pullman. Unfortunately, the ball was lost in a ruck on Llanishen’s 22, but the front row showed some good skills here – which could have resulted in the try of the season!
Half time score Llanishen 0 Mountain Ash10.
The Young Firm came out and continued to boss the game until around 5 minutes into the half when Llanishen seemed to wake up. They played some good rugby, with fast running and passing, and managed to score a try of their own. Mount responded well, with a try of their own, centre Cole Nash run onto quick ball and scored under the posts. Llanishen responded and had some more periods of play which tested the Mount defence, but it held strong and the game ended having held them to just the one score.
It was also good to see some players coming back from injury today to give the Mount squad numbers a welcome boost.
Tries: McGinley Price, Cole Nash. Conversions: Jayden Pugh (2). Penalties: Jayden Pugh.
