Mount Never In It

The Old Firm were never in this game and were well beat by the home team who run in six tries.

Right from the off, Rhydyfelin were awarded a penalty 25 metres out and elected to kick to the corner rather than at goal. After trying to drive over from the lineout which was held by the Mount pack, a scissors in midfield saw a home back score the first try under the posts, with the conversion making it 7-0 after 3 minutes play.

A penalty by outside half Declan Conway reduced the home side’s lead to 7-3 as Mount started to get back into the game. Further pressure in the Rhydyfelin half was rewarded with another penalty kicked by Conway, this time from 25 metres, to make it 7-6 after 15 minutes.

A lineout drive and then a penalty to the home team saw them take play to 10 metres out from the Mount line. From loose ball in midfield, the Rhydyfelin scrum half picked the ball up and run in an arc around the Mount defence and scored near the corner to take his side’s lead up to 12-6.

A long kick by Rhydyfelin up to the Mount 22 was run back but a tackle 15 metres out had the Old Firm defence at sixes and sevens. A penalty to Rhydyfelin was quickly taken and a long pass out to the wing saw him score in the corner for his side’s third try of the afternoon to extend the lead to 17-6 after 28 minutes.

The Old Firm got off to a better start in the second half but it turned out to be a false dawn. Wing Morgan James, outside half Conway, and centre Jarrod Cushion all handled to create an overlap but the pass was dropped a potential try scoring chance was gone.

A penalty try under the posts for the home team took their lead up to 24-6 after 43 minutes. A pass by second row Jarrod Parfitt to centre Cushion in the Mount 22 put him away and he run in from 75 metres for the Old Firm’s first try of the game. Conway converted with a well-judged kick to give Mount hope at 24-13 down with an hour played.

But the game reverted to type, with Mount out of sorts and Rhydyfelin scoring two more tries to end a bleak afternoon for Mount.
