Young Firm Win Captures Plate

This game was played in a very strong wind, but both teams made the best of it and played some good rugby. Mount got off to a great start after just 5 minutes. Scrum half Ethan Davies sniped through from a ruck 10 metres into the Treorchy half, stepped the defenders and scored. This really lifted the Mount team and set the tone for the first half. Jayden Pugh converted to make it 7-0.

Treorchy had some strong runners with one of their forwards in particular causing problems. They got back into the game after 15 minutes when they took play into the Mount half and scored a try, which they converted, to level the score at 7-7.

Possession went back and fore, but it was the Young Firm who took a 10-7 lead through a penalty by Pugh to lead at half time.

Mount made a lively start to the second half, but the game slowed after that with both teams again sharing possession. The Young Firm’s defence was very strong, and on a couple of occasions Treorchy were either held up over the line or forced into handling errors.

Pugh kicked another penalty to put Mount 13-7 up, and with ten minutes left kicked another with a fine effort from near halfway to make it 16-7.

This was an important game for both sides as both were equal on points in the Cardiff Rugby ‘Plate North’ group, so winning the game means the Young Firm have won the Plate – the team’s first bit of silverware. As you can imagine, the players, coaches, parents and supporters were over the moon!

Try: Ethan Davies. Conversion: Jayden Pugh. Penalties: Jayden Pugh (3).
