Mount Finish League Season With Bonus Point Win

The Old Firm got their first win over Treorchy since 2015/16 with this 30-24 win at the Oval last Saturday. During the first half though, the omens were not looking good as the home side built up a 21-7 half time lead. But after the break, the Mount forwards took control of the game and slowly Treorchy’s lead was overturned. Prop James Cowdry scored 2 tries, with second row Daniel Phillips and flanker Chris Edmunds – playing in his 370th game for Mount – getting one each. Full back Declan Conway converted one, and when he was replaced by Liam Jones, he kicked a second conversion and two penalties to complete the scoring. Scrum half Ross Davies was outstanding for the Old Firm, leading from the front.

The bonus point win took Mount’s points total in Division 1 East Central up to 55, which was good enough for a 7th placed finish. During the season, the Old Firm beat the division’s winners, Glamorgan Wanderers, 2nd placed side Rumney and 4th placed club Treorchy, and there were two close games against 3rd placed Bridgend Athletic. The division has proved to be very competitive this season with little between most of the teams in it. There is plenty of talent in the Mount club and the Old Firm squad is capable of better next season if they apply themselves.
