Mountain Ash and Caldicot 2nd XVs played the return fixture for the Brunel Shield at Mountain Ash. The shield has been kindly sponsored by Brunel Shipping & Liner Services Limited and will be competed for between the 2nd XVs of both clubs each season. The aggregate score of both matches will determine the winner. The Old Firm won the game in Caldicot earlier in the season, 26-10, and were looking to be the inaugural holders of the Brunel Shield. They did just that at Caedrawnant, scoring 7 tries in total through centre Morgan James (2), wing Gareth Williams, outside half Morgan Cartwright, wing Ethan Conway, full back Gavin Roberts, and a penalty try. Morgan James converted three of the tries and outside half Matthew Parfitt one. It was a good day all-round as Caldicot played the game in good spirit and brought a good contingent to the Mount clubhouse afterwards, staying until 7:00pm. Former Mount scrum half and captain, Bob, Narbett, who captained the 1st XV in 1956/57, and is now 92 years old, concluded an excellent afternoon by presenting Mountain Ash Athletic captain, Jonathan Lock, with the shield. Mr Narbett was presented with a copy of the recent history book published about the 1940 to 1990 era, which he took part in, called "The Old Firm's Proud Past, 1940-1990, Volume 2".
