In Memorium: Mr Philip A. Jenkins

It is with great sadness that the club has to report the passing of former youth and senior player, 1st XV captain, and club chairman, Philip A. Jenkins, after his brave fight against the debilitating effects of Parkinson’s disease.

Phil started his lifetime association with the club playing for the Youth XV and moved up to the senior ranks where he played centre threequarter. He was a regular 1st XV player in the club’s Centenary season of 1975/76, and in 1976/77 was chosen as 1st XV captain. He played his part in the 1st XV’s record-breaking achievement of 29 winning games in 1978/79, and was also a member of the Mount XV which famously beat New Zealand opponents, Goldfields, 20-18, at the Rec in October 1980. In the photograph displayed of the Mount team that night, Phil is in the front row on the far left. In 1981/82, he once again captained the 1st XV.

After his playing days, he was at the forefront of modernising the club’s administration in the Summer of 1991 and was elected club chairman at the 1991 AGM. He continued in post for three seasons, during which time he was the club’s leadman in the joint venture with Cynon Valley Borough Council which built Duffryn Pennar Park. What a legacy this is.

Although stepping down at the end of the 1993/94 season, he continued to follow the club, week in, week out, home and away. He will be sadly missed by the many friends he had.

The club passes its deepest sympathy to Phil’s wife Norma, their children Kate and Rhys and to all of their family.

Details of the funeral arrangements are as follows:-

Wednesday 7th July 2021 at Glynnaf Crematorium at 2:45pm. Followed by a celibration of Phil`s life at Mountain Ash RFC.
