Old Firm Gain Bonus Point in High Scoring Defeat

This open, free flowing game saw 12 tries in total scored with both teams getting a 4 try bonus point. Mount got off to a good start, taking play up to the Rumney line and from a 25 metre penalty, scrum half Liam Jones made it 3-0. Throughout the whole game, the home team were sharp behind and made the most of the ball from all parts of the field. With both sides throwing the ball about, 6 tries were scored by half time, four by the home team and two by Mountain Ash, to give a score of 24-17 to Rumney.

The attacking rugby continued after the break with another 6 tries being scored, Rumney finishing as worthy winners. Even though the home team held the upper hand in the second half, at 43-24 up after 65 minutes of play, they were still not confident of running out winners and elected to kick a 25 metre penalty to make it 46-24. The Old Firm’s best try of the match was scored shortly after the ball was taken through a number of phases up to the Rumney 22, forwards Jack James, James Cowdry and Kriss Sanders being prominent. A turnover saw Rumney counter attack but some composed covering play by centre Steve Brittain and wing Sam Akintioye set up a ruck which Mount attacked from, centre Alex Hughes breaking free and chipping over the Rumney defence where he followed up and touched down after the ball was not gathered. Second row David Richards had a good all round game for the Old Firm, contributing with ball in hand and taking a lot of lineout ball for Mount and disrupting the home side’s throw as well. Scrum half Liam Jones converted all four tries and kicked a penalty to finish with 11 points.
