Young Firm Into Cup Next Round

The Young Firm travelled to mid Wales their first cup game of the season. For many players, it was their first competitive game since they played Under 14 rugby. Gwernyfed had the bare 15 players and went for passive scrums from the start, but at least the game was played.

Mount took the lead after 10 minutes after pressure on home line resulted in back row Kenzie Jenkins powering over in the corner. The conversion hit the upright and bounced over to give the Young Firm a 7 point lead. The pressure continued, but some handling errors and solid defence by Gweryfed saw no further score in the first half.

Mount started the second half strongly, keeping up the pressure, and eventually some very slick passing in their own half saw centre Iestyn Robins run down the wing from half way and score under the posts.

Gwernyfed did have phases where they were camped on the Young Firm's line, but once again solid defence by Mount pushed them back every time they tried to score. One turnover and some cool offloads saw No.8 Steffan Calderbank receive the ball on his own 22 and run it in from there, with a few hand offs required enroute.

Some pushing and shoving saw Gwernyfed get a penalty and Mount a yellow card. Even playing a man short, there was no way through for the home team, but at the end of the game, with Gwernyfed in our 22 for a prolonged spell, there were a further two yellow cards for infringements in defence, and with Mount having only 13 men, Gwernyfed were finally able to spot a gap and scored in the final move of the game.

Tries: Kenzie Jenkins, Iestyn Robins, Steffan Calderbank.

Conversions: Iestyn Robins (2).
