Mount Play First Warm-Up Game At Senghenydd

Mount were grateful to Senghenydd for filling in at late notice after Felinfoel dropped out on Thursday evening. Mount used a squad of players as did the hosts and the game was played over three thirds.

The first 30 minutes was an even affair with Senghenydd scoring the one and only try.

The second third saw plenty of changes in both teams. Mount got their first try of the afternoon from back five player Daniel Phillips who run powerfully from a lineout 25 metres out to touch down near the corner.

After a Mount attack broke down on halfway, a kick upfield and quick following up by Senghenydd took play to 5 metres from the Old Firm’s line. The Mount forwards secured the ball and after it was passed in-goal, a delicate chip over on-coming Senghenydd players saw the ball bounce and hooker Kieran Coomer get hold of it and get away up to the Mount 10 metre line. He passed to wing Curtis Williams who made ground and put fellow wing Cole Nash free for a run in from 35 metres for a spectacular try that covered the whole field. Outside half Callum Hall converted with a lovely kick.

Basic errors by the Old Firm in their own 22 gave Senghenydd a scrum close-in, from which they drove over and were awarded a try.

Mount hit back immediately. A scrum in the Senghenydd half saw Hall show good vision to grubber kick through and sprint 15 metres to pick the ball up and touch down under the posts for an excellent individual try which he also converted.

The Old Firm’s fourth try of the third came soon after when interpassing among the backs was finished off by Hall, who run in for his second try of the afternoon from 20 metres. Another well-judged conversion followed.

From the restart, second row Steffan Calderbank put full back Jarrod Cushion away and he run in from 50 metres for Mount’s third try in five minutes.

Senghenydd had the better of the last third and scored a try with the last move of the game.

This Saturday, 19 August, the Old Firm travel to Bedlinog for their second trial match, kick off is 1:00pm due to the Wales v South Africa World Cup warm-up game at 3:15pm.
