Seven Up For The Old Firm

The Old Firm scored 7 tries and converted 5 in this convincing home win against Dinas Powys. The game was effectively over by half time as Mount built up a 31-0 interval lead with 5 of the tries.

The Old Firm went straight on the attack and from a penalty kick into the Dinas 22, a catch by flanker David Richards and drive on by the pack was finished with a touchdown by hooker and captain Jarrad Parfitt to make it 5-0 after 4 minutes play.

Mount kept on attacking, kicking any penalties for position rather than points, and putting the ball through the hands as much as possible. Outside half Callum Hall, hooker Parfitt and centre Jamie Long almost broke through, but Dinas survived, and after 15 minutes play, they got into the Mount half for the first time.

The Old Firm went further ahead when the ball was moved to full back Jarrod Cushion, who drew his man and gave a well-timed pass to wing Curtis Williams who run in from 15 metres. Hall converted with a superb kick from the touchline to make it 12-0 after 22 minutes.

From the restart, hooker Parfitt and prop Kieron Coomer were involved in another attack, and scrum half Morgan Cartwright broke away and chipped over the Dinas defence into their 22 where the Mount forwards were quickly in to gain a penalty.

The kick to the corner set up a 5 metre lineout which was taken and from the drive over, prop James Cowdry scored Mount’s third try, which Hall converted to take the lead up to 19-0.

Dinas Powys’ first real attack in the Mount 22 went one way and then back, but a loose pass to ground was picked up by outside half Hall who raced away from 70 metres out for a try under the posts and then converted it to make it 26-0 after 31 minutes.

The first half scoring was brought to an end when full back Cushion and outside half Hall exchanged passes for Hall to run in the fifth try from 25 metres out, making it 31-0 at half time.

The Old Firm continued where they left off at the start of the second half. A superb diagonal 50 metre kick by Hall gave Mount the throw-in to a lineout on the Dinas 22. A catch and drive to 10 metres out followed by a couple of penalties saw flanker Richards take a lineout catch and prop Cowdry score his second try of the afternoon in the corner. Another beautiful struck conversion by Hall made it 38-0 after 46 minutes.

To be fair to Dinas, they upped their game and kept going, and had their best period of the match, trying hard to score, but they were met by a determined Mount defence which kept them out. The game was loose on times, with Mount losing their shape on occasions. But, with 5 minutes left, the Old Firm put together a 50 metre attack and scored their best try of the game. A lineout take on halfway was moved wide to full back Cushion, who was in space and got away. After some nice interpassing among the backs, an inside pass to outside half Hall saw him run round under the posts for his hat-trick and Mount’s seventh try, which he converted, to give himself a personal match haul of 25 points.

With St Peter’s losing, the win puts Mount at the top of the Division 1 East Central table. That’ll mean nothing this Saturday, 18 December, when they travel the short distance to Ynysybwl for a local derby Division 1 East Central game, kick off 2:30pm.
