Better Performance by Mount

This was a competitive performance by the Old Firm away to unbeaten Rumney, with a 12 point margin not reflecting a hard fought game. Rumney were on top in the first half and their knowledge of where to kick to gain maximum advantage from the crosswind saw them on top territorially. Chances were few and far between, with both defences on top.

Mount had the first scoring chance early on but a penalty on the Rumney 22 was hit wide. The Old Firm defence was committed and the scrum and lineout solid throughout.

The only chance of the half came after 25 minutes when the home team moved the ball back to the narrow side and their centre broke through to score midway out, with the conversion making it 7-0. A Mount move which saw the ball passed across the field created an overlap, but the last pass was too hard and the ball knocked-on.

The Old Firm had the better territorially of the second half but could not breach the Rumney defence. Early on, a dropped pass was kicked on by wing Rhys Davies into the home 22 and quickly followed up. Davies was in the action again with a chip over the defence. A penalty to Mount from a lineout in the home 22 was kicked to the corner. Pressure in and around the Rumney 22 saw the ball moved and a gap appear in the defence but the home side survived.

With the game in the 73rd minute, a dropped catch by the Mount defence gave Rumney a rare scrum near the Old Firm’s 22 which the home outside half made the most of by dummying and just making the try line to score a decisive unconverted try which made it 12-0.

Mount continued attacking and finished the game in the home half, but unfortunately they had nothing to show for a committed performance over 80 minutes.
