Young Firm Make Winning Start

The Young Firm and St Peter’s had a ding-dong battle at the Rec to start the season in Division A of the Blues Youth League. The Rocks proved to be a much improved side from last season and proved tough opposition. From the kick off, Mount won turnover ball and moved it wide to right wing Callum Lewis to score the first try and an easy win looked on the cards. Scrum half and captain Morgan Cartwright scored the Young Firm’s second try of the half when he got over from a driving maul by the Mount pack. The game continued to be competitive throughout the second half with the Rocks giving as good as they got. Scrum half Cartwright got his second try when he shot through a gap in the Rocks’ defence after Mount had taken the ball through several phases, and then he completed a fine afternoon’s work with an excellent 40 metre penalty on the angle to make it 18-14. This was a good win for the Young Firm but they know they have to improve their option taking and up their fitness level to put teams under pressure for the whole game. Mountain Ash Youth welcome all players who are interested in playing. Any young player interested in joining the Mount squad is welcome to training on a Tuesday and Thursday.
