Young Firm Win Local Derby

Mountain Ash Youth made a slow start to their Blues Youth League game against Aberdare Youth at Caedrawnant. The visitors went ahead with a penalty to lead 3-0. The Mount forwards started making inroads but the Aberdare defence held. Scrum half Morgan Cartwright then took a quick tap penalty, chipped over the top, and was taken out illegally. From the penalty awarded, Mount took the lead through a try by flanker Owen Jenkins who made a barn storming run.

In second half, the Young Firm continued to attack and should have scored, but wrong options cost them points. A spilled ball on the Aberdare try line saw the visitors go the full length of the field to take the lead 10-5. After pressurising Aberdare in their 22 for long periods, livewire scrum half Morgan Cartwright sped through a gap to score near the posts, outside half Morgan James converting to make it 12-10 to the Young Firm. Two minutes later, from a lineout on the halfway, Cartwright was again in the action, kicking the ball deep into the Aberdare 22 and following up quickly enough for the bouncing ball to go straight into his hands for him to score his second try in as many minutes. With outside half James converting, it took the Mount lead up to 19-10. Mount again attacked through forwards Owen Jenkins, Daniel Phillips, Mitchell Barnard and captain Cameron Davies, and the ball was shipped out to wing Rhys Davies who scored in the corner to complete the scoring at 24-10.

Encouragingly for Mount, changes were made with 15 minutes left but the younger boys brought on defended manfully to secure victory.
