Losing Bonus Point for Old Firm

The Old Firm went in front in the first minute of this game after a loose pass by the home team was quickly seized upon by the Mount forwards who won a penalty 20 metres out which full back Jack Roberts converted. The home team had first use of a cross field wind and a chip into the Mount 22 resulted in them getting the throw-in to the lineout 15 metres out which was taken and driven over for a converted try to make it 7-3 after just 5 minutes play. Shortly after, a penalty at a scrum followed by backchat to the referee cost Mount 10 metres, Dinas taking full advantage to kick a 35 metre penalty to extend their lead to 10-3. Although struggling at the scrum, the Old Firm had the better of the territory during the first half with most of the play in the Dinas half. Scrum half Ross Davies took a quick penalty and set up an attack which centre Alex Hughes took on and there were further penalties which were kicked to the corner but all no avail. A high kick by Dinas was taken by full Roberts on the Mount 10 metre line and returned, Roberts following up and winning the catch to put hooker Jarrod Parfitt away. A penalty conceded by the home team near their 22 was kicked by Roberts to make it 10-6 after 25 minutes. Dinas took play into the Mount 22 for the first time since their try but it was quickly cleared. A couple of penalties took Mount to just 5 metres out from the home line but once again they could not get a score. A loose ball on the ground near the Mount 10 metre line was picked up by home right wing James Wiltshire who beat one man and showed a turn of speed to go through the Mount defence and score under the posts. The conversion put Dinas 17-6 up after 30 minutes. The Old Firm regrouped and hit back. Pressure once again in the home 22 saw a strong run from a scrum by centre Alex Hughes and after the ball was moved to the touchline, hooker Jarrod Parfitt went through a gap in the home defence to touch down right on half time, full back Roberts kicking a well-judged conversion from 5 metres in to make it 17-13 at half time.

In the opening minutes of the second half, scrum half Ross Davies made fully 20 metres from a penalty to take play to 5 metres out where the ball was fed to hooker Jarrod Parfitt who took it at speed to drive over for a well worked try. Roberts converted and the Old Firm looked to be on their way with a 20-17 lead. A yellow card to a home forward after 51 minutes seemed to tilt the balance in the Old Firm’s favour but it had no real effect on the game as it continued to be competitive with both sides making errors. After losing a scrum just 5 metres out from the Dinas line, Mount received another set back when the home team threw the ball wide from a scrum on halfway where the full back came into the line and worked a scissors with right wing Wiltshire who once again run in for a try which put Dinas in front 22-20. The home team went further in front on the hour when the ball was moved to the touchline and a home centre touched down, the conversion from wide out hitting an upright. The Old Firm were not finished and took play into the home 22 where play was taken to 5 metres out but once again the home defence held, which left the Old Firm with a losing bonus point that keeps them in 9th place in the Division 1 East Central table.
