Mount Out of Sorts in Rhiwbina

Three well taken tries in the first 45 minutes won this game for Rhiwbina. The hosts went in front after a couple of minutes, Mount conceding two penalties from the kick off, both of which were kicked to touch and took play to just 5 metres out. A catch and drive saw the first try scored, which was converted to make it 7-0. The Old Firm put a couple of attacks together, No.8 Kriss Sanders and second row Jarrod Parfitt putting in some strong runs. Wing Will Holley converted a 25 metre penalty to make it 7-3 after 15 minutes. Another sustained attack took play into the home 22 which resulted in another penalty but it went wide. The hosts went further in front after 25 minutes, the ball being moved to either side of the field before home wing Alex Cooke got away down the touchline from 20 metres out to score in the corner to take his side’s lead up to 12-3. Mount responded with another attack and cut the deficit to 12-6 with a 25 metre penalty by Holley. It was short lived as some crisp passing saw the ball moved wide to the incoming full back who put his wing away. A fine tackle by Holley stopped the attack 15 metres out but quick ruck ball saw it moved again, this time a penalty in midfield being conceded which was converted to make it 15-6. Backchat to the referee gave Rhiwbina a 20 metre penalty which was converted to take the home team’s lead up to 18-6 and then yet another penalty was conceded just before half time which the hoe team kicked to make it 21-6 at the turnround.

Rhiwbina took advantage of Mount’s failure to clear the ball from the restart and from a 15 metre scrum, a grubber kick through the oncoming Mount defence saw a Rhiwbina back get to the ball first to get the touchdown which made it 26-6 after 45 minutes. The Old Firm rallied after that and had the better of the game, keeping the ball in hand, and taking play up to the home line where centre Alex Hughes burrowed over from close-in to make it 26-11 after 50 minutes. Mount had their tails up and continued to pin Rhiwbina in their own 22, which led to two home forwards being yellow carded for infringing. Some strong running by props James Cowdry and Thomas Harper, and second row Jarrod Parfitt still didn’t lead to another score, and although Rhiwbina received a third yellow card, the hosts held out to be worthy victors on the day.
