Slow Start to Second Half Costs Old Firm

The Old Firm fielded a team which included half of last season’s successful Youth team for this Division 1 East Central game at Treorchy. Early Mount pressure ended when outside half Kieron Olden scored under the posts, wing Will Holley converting to give the Old Firm a 7-0 lead. Treorchy hit back after 12 minutes when a kick downfield saw the home full back evade a few tackles to start a counter attack going which ended with an unconverted try. A kickable penalty close to the Treorchy line was taken quickly to no avail, and shortly afterwards, second row David Richards was bundled into touch near the corner. The hosts took the lead with a lineout take and drive which saw them go into half time 12-7 up. The first quarter of the second half was dominated by Treorchy. A couple of penalties and two tries were enough to see Treorchy home, although Mount replied with tries from prop Thomas Harper and second row Sean Moore, the latter showing a neat piece of skill to chip over the defence and pick up the bouncing ball to get the Old Firm’s third try, which Holley converted to make it 32-17.
