On Friday night, Mountain Ash Youth welcomed Abercynon Youth to the Rec and won 21-7. Although the Mount forwards dominated for long periods throughout the game, and came close to scoring on a few occasions the Abercynon defence stood firm. Twenty minutes into the game the Young Firm had a lineout 5 metres from the ‘cynon line, and after continuous pressure, Josh Davies broke through to score the first try of the night which full back and Captain Jack Roberts converted. Abercynon hit back immediately and from a chip over the top of the Mount defence, a dropped ball saw ‘cynon go over for a converted try to level the score at 7-7. Undeterred, the Young Firm hit back, backrow forward Jordan Burke getting Mount’s second try, which Roberts again converted to make it 14-7 at half time. Mount had the perfect start to the second half when Ethan Conway chipped through for centre Jarrod Cushion to pick up at pace and take play into ‘cynon’s 22, where he passed to wing Daniel Cartwright who scored under the posts, Roberts adding the extras. The rest of the game saw Mount camped in ‘cynon’s half but resolute defence and wrong options saw no further scoring. Although it was a good win for Mount, they will be a little disappointed with their finishing from the opportunities on offer.
